The American Rat Terrier
The Rat Terrier’s country of origin is the United States. Its original function was hunting small rodents like rats and squirrels. The average height for a miniature Rat Terrier is 10 to 13 inches tall at the shoulder (withers). The standard Rat Terrier is 13 to 18 inches tall at the shoulder. The average weight is 10 to 15 pounds and lifespan 15 to 18 years.
The Rat Terrier is bred from a Smooth Fox Terrier, Whippet, Manchester Terrier, and Beagle. The Rat Terrier’s temperament is less aggressive and more calm than that of most terriers. They are loyal, affectionate and protective; cheerful and playful—they are in tune with their owner’s mood. If exposed early on, a Rat Terrier will adjust to your normal environment such as vacuuming, often running along with you and barking at the machine. Rat Terriers like to help out whenever they get the chance. Their playful character is quite a menace at times, but they are so cute you cannot help but play along. They are active and playful throughout their lifetime. As puppies, they will require much more socializing and attention than older dogs. Their hair is short and dense. The Rat Terrier’s colors vary from solid, bi-colored, tri-colored, tuxedo, calico, and marbled pattern. Rat Terriers are sensitive to HARSH reprimands. Training should be positive and fun, and training session short.
The Rat Terrier should be exposed to as many good experiences early in life. A Rat Terrier can still be socialized even if it is full grown. Of course, this will take longer and you will have to be more patient. So do not be afraid of adopting a Rat Terrier who is older. This can be a great choice for you instead of a puppy. Remember, the more you socialize with your Rat Terrier the more you will enjoy having him as a companion.
