Our Rat Terriers

The Rat Terrier reaches its growth peak at about 6 to 8 months but does not completely mature until about age 2. Our Rat Terriers have long legs with tricolor markings.  We have miniature and standard Rat Terriers.  Ours are raised together as a family and we are family.  We have group time and one-on-one time with each other.  We hang out at the pool and go for long walks in the woods. There is never a dull moment with all six.

Roxy weighs 18 pounds. She is lean and runs like a Greyhound, is very competitive and playful.  She loves playing Frisby and does not like to share it. Dazee and Dixee are Roxy’s sisters from a litter after her whelp date.  Roxy is very athletic and though she has been bred and is a great mother, she would rather be hunting, playing Frisby or sunbathing.

Roxy was spayed at age 4 and continues playing Frisby with a passion.

Rex is very obedient and patiently waits his turn for his personal indoor or play time. He has a great temperament and is never aggressive.  He is a great watchdog.  At six months, Rex weighed 8.5 lbs and at one year, 18 lbs.

Although Rex was never leash trained, he can be harnessed and leashed to go anywhere with total cooperation and no barking at people and responds to commands.  He is a true gentleman in public places and doesn’t seem to be bothered by going into the city which is unusual territory from his norm in the country.  Rex has bred with Roxy, Dixee, and Lacey.  His distinctive markings are dominant in both litters making beautiful puppies.

Dazee and Dixee at 6 weeks and 1 year old

Dixee and Dazee have developed their personalities.  As sisters they have been raised together, and this has proven to be an advantage for them and their transition into our family.

Placing a puppy with an older dog will help the puppy develop good habits providing the older dog has been properly trained.  We have used this method with much success, especially for house training.

Puppies also pick up established commands known to the older dog. Oscar (bottom) is an example of this training technique.  At one year, Dixee weighs 11 pounds and Dazee at ten pounds.

Oscar is now over three years old, he is very small, and weighs eight pounds, and has fathered several litters.  He delivers a unique puppy in every litter, all white with scanty apricot or dark tan markings.

Although Oscar is small, the size of the mother  has determined the size of his puppies.  The smaller the mother, the smaller the puppies (and as adults).  We keep pictures of the puppies as they mature on our comments link.  Oscar is very lean and muscular much like the Whippet.

Lacey at 5 weeks and 1 year old

Lacey is all white with one thumb size apricot mark in the middle of her back, and some apricot markings on one ear and around one eye.  At two years old, Lacey is very lean but muscular and weighs eight pounds.

She is half sister to Oscar, having the same fathers. We do not inbreed our dogs and she will not be bred with Oscar. Inbreeding can cause many health problems.

Her coloring and shape resembles the Whippet.
